The Erskine Programme brings 75 distinguished international visiting academics to the University each year. Previous Erskine Fellows have included two Nobel Prize winners.
There is a joint doctoral programme with the China Scholarships Council and student exchange programmes with 50 universities in North America, Europe and Asia-Pacific.
The Study Abroad programme allows you to study overseas for one or more semesters, choosing from hundreds of courses.
Unique research facilities
In 2010 the University received in excess of NZ$49m (US$39m) in research funding. We have cutting-edge research facilities, including
- New Zealand's leading nanotechnology laboratory
- Human Interface Technology Laboratory (HITLabNZ)
- New Zealand Institute of Language, Brain and Behaviour
- Social Science Research Centre and many other specialist research units in a diverse range of fields.
The University has over 20 research centres, including
- Gateway Antarctica: Centre for Antarctic Studies and Research
- Biomolecular Interaction Centre
- New Zealand Institute of Language, Brain and Behaviour
- Waterways Centre for Freshwater Management
- National Centre for Research on Europe (NCRE) - recently received US$1.7 million in funding from the European Commission and is a partner in Erasmus Mundus, a European Commission-run international doctoral student exchange programme.
- NZi3 is a national ICT teaching and research institute hosted by UC in partnership with companies including HP, IBM and Microsoft.
The University operates field stations in Kaikoura, Cass, Westport, Harihari, the sub-Antarctic Snares Islands and Antarctica, and New Zealand's premier astronomical research facility at Mount John, Tekapo, famous for its clear southern skies.
We are also a partner in the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) project and operate a field station in
Nigeria as part of the Nigerian Montane Forest project. These facilities mean that UC offers research opportunities in the field that no other New Zealand university can match.
The super high-speed KAREN network connects the University to the international research community.
